NTT Group can trace its roots back to 1869 and the introduction of the telegraph in Japan. Since privatisation in 1985, the company has been diversifying extensively, building new subsidiaries, developing emerging technologies and expanding into new markets.
Alongside NTT Communications, other companies within the NTT Group are NTT East, NTT West and NTT Data which serve the Japanese market with traditional telecommunications and data services. NTT DoCoMo provides mobile voice and communication services worldwide.
NTT Europe Online is a wholly owned subsidiary of NTT Communications.

As of March 31st 2007, the NTT Group employed over 200,000 people worldwide, with operating revenues of just under 11 trillion JPY (approximately 65 Billion EUR, 44 Billion GBP, 87 Billion USD).
